Project Details
The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge and the recently established AstraZeneca Discovery Centre in Cambridge are seeking applications for a 4-year PhD studentship. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in a collaborative research project titled “Mining the microbiome: how do gut microbes modulate visceral pain?”
The project is of significant importance due to the global prevalence of visceral pain, which affects millions of individuals, imposes a substantial economic burden, and disrupts daily life activities. Chronic pain, including visceral pain, often remains inadequately treated due to the limited efficacy of existing therapies and the adverse side effects associated with commonly used drugs, particularly those causing gastrointestinal issues.
This research project aims to explore the role of the gut microbiome in influencing visceral pain. The evidence supporting this connection is growing, suggesting that gut microbes have a substantial impact on visceral pain through both direct interactions with sensory neurons and indirect effects involving the activation of immune cells.
Under the joint supervision of Professor Ewan St. John Smith from the Department of Pharmacology and Dr. John Linley at AstraZeneca, the selected student will have the opportunity to work across both sites, gaining a comprehensive perspective on the project. The research will involve investigating the intricate cellular mechanisms by which human gut microbes modulate visceral pain.
