Project Details

This fully funded PhD position lies at the interface between fundamental physics and industrial application. It is part of a fully funded Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council titled “Next-Generation Light Source: Driving plasmas to power tomorrow’s nanolithography (MOORELIGHT)”.

Advanced semiconductor devices are produced using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light at just 13.5nm wavelength. The recent revolutionary introduction of EUV lithography (EUVL) was the culmination of several decades of collaborative work between industry and science – a Project Apollo of the digital age.

EUVL is powered by light that is produced in the interaction of high-energy CO2-gas laser pulses with molten tin microdroplets. The use of such lasers leads to low overall efficiency in converting electrical power to useful EUV light.

Replacing gas lasers with much more efficient solid-state lasers may significantly improve efficiency, as well as output power. It is currently however unclear what laser wavelength, and what plasma ‘recipe’ should be used. This is because we lack understanding of the underlying complex physics. The goal of project MOORELIGHT is to deliver the missing.

Project Details

Renewable energy is key to tackling climate change and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. The intermittent supply of renewable energy hampers its efficient usage and creates a pressing need for innovative energy conversion approaches.

Energy-to-fuel conversion using plasma-assisted catalytic conversion is highly promising for producing urgently needed fuels from greenhouse gases. In plasma catalysis, reactants are activated in a plasma discharge, allowing for remarkable efficiencies beyond the limits of thermal catalysis.

The catalyst surface defines the reaction pathway and selectivity, and is thus key in catalyst design. However, at present the active state of catalyst surfaces in plasma is unknown, limiting the impact of plasma catalysis by inhibiting the design of dedicated plasma catalysts.

In the SURPLAS project, we will determine the surface reaction mechanisms of catalysts in plasma and demonstrate the rational design of plasma catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation.

As a PhD student, you will compare the interaction of catalytically active metals favoring different products and determine the details of reaction pathways at the surface. You will learn to prepare atomically clean surfaces in ultra-high vacuum and perform spectroscopy experiments to determine their active state live during exposure to plasma.

Using photoelectron spectroscopy, you will analyze the surface composition and oxidation state of the active surface, allowing conclusions on the reaction mechanism. Infrared absorption spectroscopy will enable you to identify the key reaction intermediates of plasma-catalytic reactions.

Eligibility

You will need to meet the requirements for an MSc-degree, to ensure eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination.

You have a university degree in (applied) physics or physical chemistry. Good verbal and written communication skills (in English) are required. Prior experience with surface science, ultra-high vacuum, and spectroscopy techniques is considered an advantage for the project.

Project Details

In this project you will work on expanding our capabilities to perform optical metrology in the terahertz spectral range, by helping to design, build and apply a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy microscope.

The microscope will use femtosecond lasers to generate and detect terahertz pulses using non-linear optical techniques. You will then apply the THz microscope to measure and understand the conductivity of 2D and 3D materials on the micrometer and nanometer scale.

In one planned mode of operation the THz microscope will be used in combination with a camera, to take THz pictures with several micrometers spatial resolution in a single laser shot.

The proposed work is part of a national (nano) metrology project, financed by a NXTGEN HIGHTECH Groeifonds grant.

Eligibility

You will need to meet the requirements for an MSc-degree, to ensure eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination. A degree in physics, physical chemistry, or a closely related subject is required for this project.

Project Details

As a PhD student, you will develop new methods to engineer wavefront and spatial coherence of a bright laser source. You will use optical fibers and freeform optics together with methods of wavefront shaping to design new imaging and metrology tools that are relevant for future semiconductor technology.

To realize future high-tech devices that are sustainable for billions of people, it is crucial to improve their optical functionalities and efficiencies.

We will take a major step forward by the unique combination of freeform optics on the macro scale and wavefront shaping on the micro scale. New devices that allow the measurement of features and overlay in integrated circuit production with higher throughput.

You will perform this project at ARCNL in close collaboration with researchers from University of Twente and semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML.

Recently, our group discovered that EUV light must originate from transitions between complex multiply excited electronic states, and not from the singly excited states decaying to the ground state as was the standing paradigm. We now face the enormous challenge of uniquely identifying such complex transitions. Currently, nobody truly knows where the EUV light stems from.

You will join a team of several PhD students and postdocs and have as an objective to design & execute spectroscopic experiments to enable obtaining pinpointing the atomic origins of EUV light and uncovering the true impact of the complex electronic structure of tin on the EUV light emission in industrial nanolithography.

Eligibility

You have (or soon will have) a University degree in (applied) physics. Interest in (experimental) atomic physics and spectroscopy is a requirement. Programming skills (Python) are welcomed. Good verbal and written communication skills (in English) are required.

Funding

The position is intended as full-time (40 hours / week, 12 months / year) appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of four years, with a starting salary of gross € 2,590 per month and a range of employment benefits.

Project Details

Are you interested in simultaneously unraveling the fundamentals of friction and contributing to the solution of friction-related challenges in computer chip production?

The research field of tribology, devoted to contact formation, friction and wear phenomena down to the atomic scale, is of direct and pressing relevance to the manufacture of semiconductor devices.

Friction-induced stresses and deformations on the scale of only a few atomic spacings are starting to challenge the future of nanolithography technology, limiting the achievable feature size in semiconductor chips.

The very onset of sliding is characterized by pre-sliding or partial slip; slip that takes place locally at a multi-contact interface as the tangential force is increased toward the maximum tangential force the interface can withstand before failing.

As multi-contact interfaces include junctions subjected to a variety of normal stresses the local threshold for the onset of slip also varies; some junctions may already slip while others remain stuck.

In this project, you will perform friction experiments on a recently developed instrument that enables measurement of the very first nanometers of slip induced at multi-contact interfaces subject to normal and tangential loads. The goal of the project is to provide insight into the pre-sliding behavior and its impact on positioning accuracy in nanolithography.

Eligibility

You will need to meet the requirements for an MSc-degree, to ensure eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination. You enjoy performing experiments and analysis to stepwise build a deeper understanding of complex physical mechanisms.

You are good at communicating and explaining the results of your work. Experimental (and modeling) experience in the field of tribology would be advantageous.
