3. Funded PhD Position in From Oceans to Clouds: Is the Antarctic ocean microlayer a source of cloud forming particles?

Summary of PhD Position:

Clouds can have a warming or cooling effect on the Planet depending on their phase. Cloud water droplets and ice crystals form on a subset of aerosol which can act either as a cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) or as an ice nucleating particle (INP). Ice clouds tend to have shorter lifetimes and a lower albedo (reflecting less solar energy back into space) than clouds which contain large numbers of water droplets. It is therefore critically important to understand the sources of CCN and INP, and how these sources might change, to make future climate predictions.

Processes such as ‘landscapes of fear’ affect where birds nest. This could introduce predictable spatial structuring in bird impacts that scale up to shape ecosystem function. However, multiple climate factors are changing seabird distributions, and humans can further modify where and how densely birds nest through habitat and population management (e.g., wild release, predator control, disturbance), potentially affecting these bird-ecosystem relationships.

13. Funded PhD Position in Anthropogenic impacts on growth and protein metabolism in the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax

Summary of PhD Position:

Pollution of coastal waters by sewage is of major concern, but little is known about the biological impact on animals, or interactions with other stressors such as ocean warming. Growth is essential in all animals, allowing individuals to reach a threshold size for reproduction and occupy adult ecological niches. Soft-tissue growth is essentially achieved by the synthesis and retention of proteins, an energetically expensive process, typically accounting for 25-40% of the energy required by an animal.

15. Funded PhD Position in Swamped: Is Crassula helmsii a significant threat to wetland biodiversity?

Summary of PhD Position:

Biological invasions represent one of the most significant threats to biodiversity. Freshwaters are disproportionately affected by such invasions, and home to a disproportionately large proportion of biodiversity, especially invertebrates. They also provide crucial ecosystem services. Crassula helmsii, a native Australasian plant, has been aggressively invading European freshwaters for over 30 years, with drastic consequences for their floristic diversity. Understanding of Crassula’s impacts on invertebrates, which make up the bulk of freshwater diversity, are more limited.

1. Funded PhD Position in Integrating Hydrodynamic and Surrogate Models for Real-Time Coastal Water Quality Prediction

Summary of PhD Position:

Poor bathing water quality poses a significant environmental and public health risk in coastal regions of England. The Environment Agency currently issues Pollution Risk Forecasts based on statistical models, however, these models often fail to capture key pollution sources such as combined sewer overflows, leading to frequent inaccuracies and unreliable forecasts. Combined sewer overflows are expected to increase in frequency and intensity as climate change drives more extreme rainfall events, further exacerbating the risk of pollution in coastal waters.

3. Funded PhD Position in How does the superficial geology of Gateshead and Newcastle influence groundwater flood risk

Summary of PhD Position:

The North East has a proud coal mining heritage, with hundreds of abandoned and flooded mine seams. Current groundwater levels are the highest ever recorded, and are rising due to the cessation of mine water pumping and climate-driven changes in rainfall. This poses significant flood risk to homes, businesses and infrastructure. For example, during the winter of 2015/2016, mine water flooding at Kibblesworth in Gateshead flooded homes and businesses including Metrocentre Retail Park. Water pollution and groundwater/mine water flooding incidents have been reported across low-lying parts of this borough.

5. Funded PhD Position in Flood risk implications of anthropogenically disturbed river-beds

Summary of PhD Position:

Sand is the world’s second most exploited natural resource after water, and riverbed sand mining has increased dramatically in recent decades. This activity reshapes river channels, altering their topography, destabilising banks, and changing how water and sediment move through large rivers. While these impacts are becoming clearer, what remains poorly understood is how long such disturbances last and, critically, how they affect local and regional flood risk.

6. Funded PhD Position in Exploring the role of UK drainage catchments in managing water levels

Summary of PhD Position:

England’s vital low-lying areas, including the Fens and Romney Marshes, depend on complex networks of drains, rivers, and pumps to regulate water levels. These drainage catchments are crucial for protecting homes, sustaining fragile wetlands, and enabling productive farmland. However, effective water management is challenging due to an incomplete understanding of these systems. We lack clarity on water movement, their sensitivity to extreme weather, and the cumulative impact of different water users.

1. Funded PhD Position in Healthy Learning in a Digital Age: The Role of Educational Media in Early Development

Summary of PhD Position:

From the earliest months of life, children are surrounded by screens, sparking widespread concern about their potential harms. However, screen time is not uniform: while some content may be passive or distracting, other forms are carefully designed to engage infants and support learning. Yet surprisingly little research has tested whether infants experience educational media as socially engaging and whether they can effectively learn from it. This project addresses that gap by combining neuroscience, psychology, and educational technology to examine how infants respond to screen-based interactions and how parental co-use shapes these outcomes.
