Early mammalian development is underpinned by a series of cell state transitions as multiple lineages form with distinct transcriptional programmes. There is accumulating evidence that post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms play a key role in these developmental transitions. 12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating RNA structural switches in the HIV-1 lifecycle: implications for viral replication and drug discovery

As we age, neurons deteriorate. This is often accelerated by mutations in proteins associated with neurological disorders. Shank3 is a key protein in the synapse, where it supports the assembly of postsynaptic density critical for synaptic transmission. Mutations in the SHANK3 gene are associated with several neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. 5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Characterization of immunological responses in patients with liver cancer to predict immunotherapy efficacy and immune-related adverse events

Liver cancer, a devastating and incurable cancer has poor patient outcomes largely due to late-stage diagnosis, limited treatment options, and lack of biomarkers for early detection and monitoring of disease progression and treatment response. In this project, we shall synthesise endohedral fullerenes such as N@C60 and metallic endohedral fullerenes (metallofullerenes) using state-of-theart production facilities including an ion implantation reactor and an arcdischarge reactor. This is a bad place for bearings and there are lots of wear and fatigue failures – design life is 20 years but bearings rarely last that long (3).
