Fully Funded PhD Program in Computer Science at University of Toronto
The PhD program provides advanced depth and breadth of computer science, and culminates in a dissertation that makes a significant and original contribution to computer science research under the guidance of a faculty member.
Admission to the program is either after the completion of a master’s degree equivalent to our MSc program or directly from an undergraduate program (referred to below as “Direct Entry PhD”).
PhD in Computer Science Program Requirements
- Completion of an appropriate bachelor’s degree with a minimum A– equivalent average in relevant courses for consideration
- Completion of an appropriate master’s degree (except for Direct Entry PhD)
- A standing that is equivalent to at least B+ (U of T 77–79% or 3.3/4.0)
PhD Funding Coverage
We offer a funding package to all of our full-time PhD students. This package includes the cost of tuition, earnings from a guaranteed teaching assistant position, and additional funding for costs of living. Applicants are automatically considered for entrance awards and are encouraged to apply for external awards for which they are eligible.
Application Requirement
2. Reference Letters: Three reference letters are required to complete your application. At least two letters should speak to your ability to conduct independent research at the graduate level. Referees with extensive research or academic experience are preferred.
3. Research interests: On the application you will be asked to rank your research interests and faculty members whom you would like to work with.
4. Statement of purpose: A personal essay of no more than two pages in length that discusses your career goals, why you want to do research, the areas of research that interest you, and your skills or qualifications. Describe any original research that you have done: the results, their importance, your role in the research, and your role in writing any publications arising from this research. If you have specific research plans, outline them here.
5. Resume/CV: Provide a resume or CV detailing your educational, professional, and other experience. List all your conference and journal publications, with complete citations including all authors, the publication venue, date, page numbers, and whether it was peer-reviewed. Also list all conference talks you have given, including the name of the conference, and the length of the talk.
6. Official academic transcripts: Applicants need upload only an unofficial scan or PDF version of their documents during the application process. Applicants who receive a conditional offer of admission will be asked to submit official copies of all final transcripts (and in some cases, degree certificates) prior to registration.
